Book Touring eats my life

Okay, I can’t complain, but I keep trying to figure out how I get to write/live/sleep after I start this book tour in February because I am going to be out there doing readings all the time! And I’ve just gotten started on setting up readings. There are more to come. Nickole Brown did 42 the year Sister came out. That’s a lot. I doubt I’ll get to that many. I don’t think she had as many side jobs as I have to say nothing of front jobs and back jobs. Just the side jobs are a lot to think about.

But, that’s what you have to do when you have a book that comes out, take a year of your life and promote that baby. Give it readings, give it radio, give it lunches and dinners, give it parties, give it more parties, give it to friends, give it to people who aren’t your friends yet but surely will be soon. Your book needs to get out of the house.

The way you do that is by connecting with everyone in your circle of influence who might be able to help you with your book. Anyone who might be able to set up a reading or better yet anyone who might be able to read with you.

If you are famous, you may have a publicist who can do this for you, this publicist simply tells people that you are wanting to read here and there and they get excited, they offer you money, airfare, hotels, they offer you gold and frankincense and myrrh just to show up and strut your stuff. If you’re less famous, then even if you have strut to stuff they might know about all that stuff, you might have to tell them, but better yet, read with someone who is famous. People will come to hear them read and get to see how cool you are.

The important thing is to get the book out there. This is no time for you to decide you need to start yoga or go to Tibet or write another book or have a child or start going to church. You don’t have time for any of that. You have a book to get out there in the world. Think of it as a baby lying in a cradle. It needs constant rocking, feeding, singing if it is to grow and go out into the world. Here are my events so far and this is only the beginning!
