What is too trivial for you to care about?

What is too trivial for you to care about?

“Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.” The Sunscreen Song

America is getting ready to make war on Syria. Do you care? Well, if you’re Syrian, it’s probably the most important thing on your mind. There is probably no more important fact in your days and nights than that. But if you’re American, you may not have spent much time today thinking about Syria.

Here are a number of other things you might feel is more important to care about:

The family barbecue you had today. Did that go well?

Should you shop at Walmart? No, you should not. In fact, statistics show that more and more Americans are sickened by Walmart’s poor treatment of their employees especially women and Walmart is continuing to fall behind Costco, which, like Trader Joes does treat their employees well. (Whole Foods actually pays you less if you need to go on a diet.)

Other things you should maybe worry about:

Is your spouse cheating on you?

Do your kids love you?

Do you have enough money to make the rent/mortgage?

Should you be eating red meat? Aren’t burgers bad for you? They are bad foryou. You should not be eating red meat.

What about the fish they use for sushi? Aren’t we overfishing the ocean? Not sure about this one. I try not to think about it because I love sushi.

What about climate change? Isn’t there anything you can do about that?

It isn’t all small stuff. But, given the capacity of the human condition, we cannot worry about everything at once. Worrying doesn’t solve our personal problems or global problems, but it’s the most natural thing to do. We spin our wheels because that’s part of what makes us human.

Animals don’t worry about the future. We are always encouraged to live in the moments, but what makes us human is that we look forward and backward.

What we see when we look backward is all the mistakes we’ve made what we see when we look forward is a future we’ve created that we can’t live with.

What is trivial? What is important?

Your children are important. If you screw up as a parent, you have screwed up your life.

Whether or not we go to war with Syria matters.

Whether of not you shop at Walmart is important, but maybe it’s not the biggest thing on your plate today.

What I am trying to do is not worry about things quite so much. It makes me ill. Sometimes I can get myself all worked up about stuff that isn’t going to change my life. That’s the point. To focus on what you can change. Some change takes a long time. But action is worth taking. Worrying is not. I’ll be thinking about that as I go to sleep.
