First, we look forward to seeing you at the prom on Saturday, come as your madness. We plan to film this for posterity. Post it to Youtube and scatter atoms about the universe. When they come looking for artistic life on this planet, this will be what they will find. You romping at our poetry prom in your ballet slippers and wig.

Today the panels for AWP were announced and the shouting and congratulations and weeping and gnashing of teeth can begin. I have had dozens of acceptances and rejections over the years so I’m never sure what the fighting is about. My favorite title this year is “It would have been a good panel if there had been someone there to shoot it every minute of its life,” referring of course to Flannery O’Connor in one of my favorite of her stories, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” which is as true now as it was when she wrote it so long ago.

One of my favorite parts of it is the conversation at the diner which goes like this:

A good man is hard to find,” Red Sammy said. “Everything is getting terrible. I remember the day you could go off and leave your screen door unlatched. Not no more.”
He and the grandmother discussed better times. The old lady said that in her opinion Europe was entirely to blame for the way things were now. She said the way Europe acted you would think we were made of money and Red Sam said it was no use talking about it, she was exactly right.
I like that very much. I like it because I know idiots who talk like that.
Back to AWP. Going to AWP is going into an open door. It shouldn’t be about getting stuff, or making them, whoever “They” are, do stuff for you. Hey, what if you do something for yourself. What if you go to Seattle and enjoy the party whether you are on a panel or not?
