Geffen Playhouse, Ellen Meeropol, what to do to promote your book

November 28th, 2011

Off to Chicago this week for our sales meeting which absurdly always falls on finals week.  Zipping off to Chicago where it’s 36 degrees is such a joy.

What I do in Chicago at our sales meeting:  I present the spring titles with their tip sheets, marketing and publicity plans and the tours we have in place.  That’s why it’s important for the authors to already be engaged in doing publicity before their book comes out.  The press does the marketing and dropping galleys for reviews and the author sets up events—one hopes.

Sometimes you have an author who doesn’t want to do any events.  But unless your author is Thomas frickin’ Pynchon, then he/she is going to be S.O.L. for getting a second book if he/she won’t do anything to promote the book.

What does an author need to do to promote their book?

Well, they need to do what our author Ellen Meeropol did.

Here is her website:

Her book was well reviewed but I give the credit for her book’s success to the author.  She got out there and worked to move this book.  Staying in your own hometown just isn’t going to cut it. And she’s coming to Los Angeles and staying with us next Sunday night.  I have to find out what she likes to drink and stock plenty of it, but since we’re having our Red Hen Christmas party the night before, we should be okay if she decides to do shots of tequila or snap down some kahlua and coke.

We had to warn her about the dogs (three of them,) cats (three of them,) chickens (three of them,) birds (thirty of them,) and rabbit (cheese stands alone.)

She’s ready for anything; that’s because she’s a New Englander.  Your average So Cal woman is a little more high maintenance.  But, just to be sure, I bought all new bedding for the room.  It’s going to look like the royal pavilion when Ellen arrives.

Check out her great photos!
